Easy and quick to knit with easy fit that every man loves. Our unique stitchery is in the matching scarf. Both are double knit, warm and soft-any man or gal will love the holiday look of them. One of my very favorite yarns to work with-you will love it too. Let the cold winds blow!
Loom: 28” Knitting Board + peg extenders set up for double knit with 1 cm spacers.
Yarn: Knit Picks City Tweed Aran/heavy worsted. Our holiday color is #24529 Blue Blood. Need 4 balls for the scarf and 2 balls for the hat. This yarn is 55% Merino Wool, 25% Superfine Alpaca, 20% Donegal Tweed. 164 yds per ball. Hand wash and dry flat.
Stitches: Rib, Stockinette, CrissCross
Finished Sizes: Hat fits head approximately 22-23” and 10” deep. Scarf measures approximately 6” X 50”.
Notions Needed: Knit hook, crochet hook, darning needle
Gauge: Stockinette stitch- 6 stitches X 9 rows=2 inches
Instructions:
Hat
Cast On 60 stitches in Rib stitch. Lay anchor yarn of any color as it will be removed.
Work (5) rows in Rib stitch.
Change to Stockinette and work until the hat measures 5.5-6” from anchor yarn.
Now, you want to decrease across the stitches so the top of the hat will fit better.
Decrease Row: We will do (4) decrease rows. When you do each of these, just move the indicated loops from the pegs and place them onto the adjacent peg towards the center of the loom. This is same as a K2tog.
First decrease row-Starting at L side of loom, lift loops from pegs #5, 15, 25, 35, 45, 55. Place each one on adjacent peg going towards center of loom. Once moved, you have (6) empty pegs. Do this to both sides of the loom. Now, carefully lift loops and move over filing in the empty pegs. Work towards center of loom. Be sure to move both loops when you come to a peg with (2) loops. The result will be (3) less pegs at each end of loom for the hat. You will now have (54) stitches.
Work (3) stockinette rows.
Second decrease row-This time, move loops on pegs # 5, 14, 23, 32, 41, 50.
Work (3) stockinette rows.
Third decrease row-This time, move loops on pegs #5, 13, 21, 29, 37, 45.
Work (3) stockinette rows.
Forth decrease row-Move loops on pegs # 5, 12, 19, 26, 33, 40.
Work (3) stockinette rows.
You now have (36) pegs on loom. Time to bind off of loom.
Bind Off: Use anchor yarn for easy gather. After last row, lay a new anchor yarn of same yarn.
Lift loops on one side of loom and place them on the pegs of other loom so that one rail has no loops and opposite rail has 2 loops. Lift bottom loop over top so that there is only one loop on pegs, and the anchor yarn is inside. Bind these stitches off using 2-loop method.
Sew side seam with invisible stitch. Gather top, using new anchor yarn and tie securely. Pull yarn to inside of hat and take a few stitches inside to secure the opening. You can use the yarn tail of the anchor yarn for this. Tuck in any remaining yarn tails.
If a pompom is desired for top of hat, you can create and add when complete.
Scarf
Note: Be sure to work each row hooking over from left to center and then right to center. Vary the center point in each row. This will ensure that your scarf edges remain even and straight.
Cast On (20) pegs in rib stitch.
Work (6) rows in Rib.
Change to Criss Cross Stitch starting with row 1 to 3 and 2 to 5. (stitch pattern #1)
Continue working the Criss Cross stitch until scarf measures approximately 50”.
Change to Rib stitch.
Work (6) rows.
Bind Off with 2-loop bind off at loom and anchor yarn in rib stitch. Keep the working yarn loose so that the ends do not pull too tightly. Tuck in any yarn tails for a great looking holiday scarf.
